Often throughout history, the management of Washington Old hall was up to the matron of the house. She would keep the accounts, do the shopping, washing, host parties all the while staying true to the duty she herself and her family. She would find herself praying at the church just across the way several times per day. I felt it was important to pay homage to the spirit of these matriarchs.

In the research for this piece, I came across the Virgin Mary's prayer, known as the Magnificat, and it's many interpretations. As I was listening to JS Bach's incredible score, I was entranced by the third movement, Quia Respexit. It felt a natural piece to describe the spirit of The Lady of the House.
